Your Lichess year, card by card

Chess Year takes every standard game a Lichess player finished in the year you choose and tells it as a short story. There is the number of games and hours, a month-by-month chart, wins, draws and losses, the split between bullet, blitz, rapid and classical, the rating line, signature openings and first moves, rival and nemesis, the best streak, the golden hour, the fastest mate and the biggest upset. The last card turns it into one image to share.

Why Lichess takes a moment

Lichess sends a player's games as a stream through its public API, and Chess Year asks for one month at a time. Without an account it streams about twenty games a second, so a year with thousands of games can take a minute or two; the progress shows how many months and games have arrived. Connect your Lichess account and it goes faster, up to three times for your own games; finished months are kept in your browser, so the next look takes seconds. If Lichess answers that it is busy, Chess Year waits a minute and continues. Variants and aborted games are skipped, and every game counts for the year it ended in.

Different from the recap on Lichess

Lichess shows signed-in players a recap of their own account. Chess Year works from the public game data instead: you can look at any public username without signing in, on a phone or a laptop, and you get a story built around your results, rating, openings and opponents, with a personality at the end and an image made for sharing. It does not need your password and cannot see anything that is not public.

Free and private

There is no sign-up and no tracking. Your browser downloads the games from Lichess and does all the counting itself; nothing is stored on our side. The last username you used and the months already downloaded are remembered in this browser only, so you can come back later and look at another year. Chess Year is an independent project and is not affiliated with Lichess.
