What a Grinder is

A Grinder plays a lot. Some days it is one game after breakfast and one after dinner, other days a long session that only ends when the streak does. The numbers on a Grinder's story are big: the games card, the hours card and the busiest day. Playing that much is a way of learning too, by meeting every opening and every trick so many times that they become familiar.

How Chess Year spots it

There are two ways to qualify. One is the total: at least 1,000 standard games in the year. The other is intensity: on the days you played, you averaged at least 15 games a day. Whichever is stronger counts, so 2,000 games is twice as strong as 1,000, and 30 games a day twice as strong as 15. A player with 300 games spread over twenty very busy days can be a Grinder too.

What your story shows

The games card shows the total and a chart of games per month, and the hours card turns it into time at the board. The moments card shows your longest winning streak and your busiest day, the date with the most games. With that many games, the rival card usually has an opponent you met again and again.

Close relatives

Many Grinders play fast, so the same year can also score as a Bullet Brain; and a lot of games at night can make a Night Owl. The card names the strongest trait. Hours are counted with a cap of four hours per game, and daily games are left out of the hours, so the total stays a fair picture of time spent at the board.
