What an All-Rounder is

An All-Rounder has no one trick. They play some blitz and some rapid, win by checkmate and by resignation, draw now and then, and keep a rating that moves without a big jump. It is the most common personality and not the least interesting: a balanced year usually means a player who adapts to the position instead of forcing a style on every game. It is also the personality of players who try a bit of everything over a year, from bullet to classical.

How Chess Year spots it

All-Rounder is the personality when no other one reaches its line. Chess Year scores every personality - Bullet Brain, Night Owl, Marathoner, Clock Assassin, Mate Maker, Peacemaker, Climber and Grinder - and if none of them scores at least 1, the year is an All-Rounder. It is also the answer for any year with fewer than 20 games, because a handful of games is too few to call a style.

What your story shows

Every card of the story still has your numbers: games and hours, results, time controls, rating, openings, rivals, best streak, golden hour, highlights and endings. For an All-Rounder these cards are where the year comes alive, since no single trait sums it up. The personality card shows a king and a queen, the two pieces that can do a bit of everything.

Close relatives

Being an All-Rounder this year says nothing about next year: one more month of bullet, a run of late games or a big rating climb can tip the balance towards another personality. If you want to see which trait came closest, look at the time-control and endings cards - the biggest share there is usually the next personality waiting.
