Night Owl

2026

A big part of your games started after 10 pm. The board comes out when the house goes quiet, and some of your best games happen in the small hours.

What a Night Owl is

A Night Owl plays when everyone else is asleep. The day belongs to work, school or family, and chess is what the evening turns into: one game, then another, then a look at the clock. Late games have their own feel, quieter and more stubborn, and the Night Owl knows both sides of it, the brilliant attack at midnight and the blunder at two in the morning.

How Chess Year spots it

Chess Year looks at the hour each game started, in the time zone of the device you use. Games that start between 10 pm and 4:59 am count as night games. When at least 35% of your standard games in the year are night games, Night Owl qualifies; the higher the share, the stronger it is. With 400 games, that means about 140 or more started at night, and you need at least 20 games in the year.

What your story shows

The moments card shows your golden hour, the hour when you won the largest share of your games among the hours you played often, and it is interesting to see whether that hour is at night or not. The month chart shows when the year was busiest, and the summary card carries the Night Owl name with the bishop that stands for it.

Close relatives

Night games are often fast games, so a Night Owl can also score as a Bullet Brain or a Grinder. The card shows the strongest trait of your year, so a player with 40% night games and 80% bullet will see Bullet Brain. If you want to know how nocturnal you really are, the golden hour on the moments card tells the rest of the story.
